Since I was flying solo today I didn’t really know what to do. Even though I have a honey-do list that’s not close to a mile long yet. So I did what any respecting hubby would do: laundry. That’s right, I did laundry and made a few phone calls.

Tomorrow I have an HVAC guy coming out to give an estimate on a new unit and furnace and a guy that does plumbing and electricals. It’ll be nice to see how much we need to start saving. Thursday I’ll have a contractor coming out to give an estimate on remodeling the upstairs area and a few other things. So far we need 20k for the kitchen.

Luckily Margaret’s friend Liz brought us over a griddle for us to cook on till we get our range (which will be 10 business days from today). For that I’m very VERY thankful.

Other than that, that’s all I got. I’m out!

Since we’ll be getting our fridge on Monday Sept 8th, Darryl and I decided that we needed to go ahead and make room for it. It’s taller & a little wider than the one originally in the house so we had to do a little demolition. I didn’t get to take photos of Darryl and I actually taking the saw to the cabinets, but I do have before & after photos below. Here is our 1st demolition job in the new house…. hope you enjoy

Before : The kitchen cabinets over where the fridge should be are still there.

After : In order to make room for the new fridge we had to remove those cabinets.

we’ve removed the doors and the side.

and now Darryl has just removed the bottom piece of wood

and here is a photo of the sawzall (reciprocating saw ) that we purchased. Darryl’s friend Dave suggested that we purchase Makita brand. He said it was a little pricey, but out lasts most others.

Yea it’s another post about the house, but hey it’s so old what can I say?

We’ve been scrubbing the kitchen from head to toe for the past couple of days to get the funky smells out. It’s funny we went to an estate sale today and the basement in that house smelled just like ours (musty smelling). There’s got to be a way to get that smell out, but anyway I didn’t mean to digress. The kitchen has tile and the grout is black and it should be a shade of light brown. I put soft scrub on all the grout and let it sit for a few moments before Margaret and I started scrubbing like crazy. Some of the blackness came up along with some food. How gross is that? Margaret had a nice routine going on cleaning the top cabinets. First she would bleach the inside of a cabinet, then take a watered down paper towel to the cabinet, and finally wipe down the inside with an organic cleanser. She’s managed to get the litter box smell out of the cabinets (which is awesome!). We know that we’re not dirty people, but Lord have mercy. These cabinets were funk filled.

Oh yea, still without a fridge and range. We do have a crusty old Kenmore dishwasher from the 70′s though. It says on the appliance that it’s a “special edition.” Too bad that it’s not special enough to update itself. There’s all sorts of crusty old soap on the inside of the dishwasher. It’s so gross.

That’s all I got kids, I’m out.

Here’s what my wife and I have been going through lately. We’ve went ahead and decided to have our house updated. We did quite a bit, new roof, vinyl siding, new windows, shutters, and gutters. The company we chose has been a nightmare, but it didn’t start off that way. Our roof was installed in one day and there were no nails, pieces of shingles, or paper anywhere in the yard. Color us impressed. The vinyl siding and windows is where the trouble began. There were people showing up on the job with alcohol trying to help install windows, drama between subcontractors and the company we chose, and shoddy work cropping up to top things off. Needless to say, we were pissed off. After many calls to the two owners of the company and after many broken promises that the two owners made to us the job still isn’t complete. This is over a month later. Here’s the lovely part though, one of the owners said that they appreciated our patience with everything that has been going on and we’ll definitely get a free meal to some snazzy restaurant here in town. Talk about a slap in the face. I just gritted my teeth on the phone when I was told that. So I wrote a lovely letter with my thoughts on the ordeal. And instead of them giving us a meal ticket, they’re going to have to do more. You figure the time we invested being at home all the time for people not showing up, our electric bill going up cause windows weren’t installed properly, the mental anguish that my wife and I have been going through, and not being able to see our families adds up to more than a free meal.

I’m expecting something very nice in return and won’t accept anything other than. So we’ll have to see. We’ve been real easy to work with, but when we’re unhappy, we’re unhappy and we’re going to try to resolve this like adults. Luckily we haven’t paid them complete and won’t until everything is satisfactory to us. I think we’d be happy with them shaving a couple thousand from our original purchase, because can you imagine the fine they’d receive for allowing people to work with alcohol on our premise alone? Oh well.

I hate drama, save that tripe for the movies.
