I have all this beautiful fabric at my finger tips and all I’m waiting on is new inspiration. Hopefully that inspiration comes soon in the form of the books I ordered from Amazon. I bought a few that had been setting on my wish-list for awhile. I’m glad I waited because I was able to purchase them pretty cheap. I also bought some knitting books, but that’s a whole different post.

You’re The Things They Carried

by Tim O’Brien

Harsh and bitter, you tell it like it is. This usually comes in short, dramatic spurts of spilling your guts in various ways. You carry a heavy load, and this has weighed you down with all the horrors that humanity has to offer. Having seen and done a great deal that you aren’t proud of, you have no choice but to walk forward, trudging slowly through ongoing mud. In the next life, you will come back as a water buffalo.

Title/Author: Hissy Fit by Mary Kay Andrews
Pages: 419
Rating: 4.5/5
Format: Hardback
Comments: Keeley Murdock catches her fiancé A.J. Jernigan having sex with her best friend/maid of honor Paige @ the rehearsal dinner. After pitching a royal hissy fit the whole wedding is called off. Keeley throws herself into her work and try’s to salvage what’s left of her pride. However the Jerrigan’s decided to put a little financial pressure on Keeley and her family. Soon Keeley and her aunt Gloria find that their interior decorating business is not fairing so well. In comes Will Mahoney who hires Keeley to renovate his antebellum mansion for the woman of his dreams who doesn’t even know he exists. Then to add to the mix there is Keeley’s friend Austin who is bound and determined to find Keeley’s mom who has been missing for more the 20 years.

Not one of your average chick lit books. This book is filled with small town politics, laughter, love, adultery, family, great friends, & mystery. All the ingredients needed to make a wonderful book. Another great one from Andrews, and I would definitely suggest this book to anyone looking for something to read @ the beach!

Title/Author: Revenge of the Middle-Aged Woman
Pages: 357
Rating: 4/5
Format: Paperback
Comments: I was infuriated at Rosie for not fighting. She didn’t yell, scream, or pitch a fit about losing her husband and job to Minty. If there is one thing I hate it’s a woman acting like a door mat. But Rosie didn’t act like a door mat. She fought when she needed too and gave in when she felt like it. She picked up the pieces of her battered heart and went on living. In the end she became a stronger woman then Minty will ever be.

Title/Author: A Little Change of Face by Lauren Baratz-Logsted
Pages: 336
Rating: 2.5/5
Format: Paperback
Comments: The premise of the story is that 40-ish Scarlett Stein decides to make herself dowdier in order to prove to her friend (Pam) that men like her for who she is not what she looks like.

I thought the story sounded unique so I picked it up. The newness wore off around the 5th chapter, and I started skimming around the 7th chapter. The story had so much promise but it ended up falling flat. The characters were shallow, selfish, and acted like they were in high school. Try as I might I just couldn’t put forth the effort to finish this book cover to cover. One main reason is I dislike reading a book about women (most of which were going on 40 years old) acting like a bunch of immature 10th graders. That was the biggest turn off for me. I had planned on reading “The Thin Pink Line” by the author also, but I think I’ll set it aside for now. I don’t know if I can take it.

if you found it in the romance section of a bookstore?
It seems that every so often my mind craves a romance novel. After weeks of reading mysteries, historicals, biographies, & classics my mind decides to go on strike. It craves the vanilla story line (not to say all romances are the same, but come on we all know that they are) of a romance; boy meets girl, boy and girl fight, boy and girl realize they like each other, boy and girl have huge fight, boy and girl get married = have kids = live happily ever after. It’s basically like my brain is taking a mini vacation. I have nothing to think about because there is no real suspense, mystery, intrigue, character depth, or plot in a romance novel.
This leads me back to my original question. Can you classify a book that has no real literary value as literature? I think not… but that does not stop me from reading romances in the comfort of my own home where no one can see me. )
